Life with Braces

Braces are a big step—and we’re here to make sure you feel confident every step of the way. From managing soreness to navigating snack time, here’s how to take care of your braces and keep your smile progress moving.
Eating with braces
Some snacks are off-limits (for now), but you’ll be back to your favorites soon enough. While wearing braces, avoid eating hard, sticky, or chewy foods, such as gum, popcorn, and raw apples. Stick with soft foods, such as pasta, mashed potatoes, bananas, yogurt, and steamed vegetables. When in doubt, choose options that don’t risk bending wires or popping brackets.
Soreness and irritation
Mild discomfort after getting your braces is totally normal. Your teeth may feel sore for a few days; try using saltwater rinses or an over-the-counter pain reliever. Your lips and cheeks might feel tender at first, but orthodontic wax can help cushion those spots until your mouth adjusts.
Loose teeth, wires, or brackets
Don’t panic if your teeth feel a little loose—movement is part of the process! If a wire or bracket comes loose, contact us so we can fix it. Until then, use clean tweezers or the eraser end of a pencil to tuck wires back into place. Cover any sharp edges with wax to prevent irritation.
Protecting your braces
Wear any additional appliances (like rubber bands or retainers) exactly as prescribed—skipping them can delay progress. Damaged or neglected appliances can extend your treatment time, so be consistent and careful.
Sports and safety
Yes, you can keep playing sports with braces! Make sure to wear a properly fitted mouthguard to protect both your teeth and your appliance. If you have a sports-related injury, check for any damage and contact us immediately. Minor discomfort can be soothed with wax or a saltwater rinse.
